Josh Sweat trade rumors heat up as NFL deadline approaches

Josh Sweat trade rumors heat up as NFL deadline approaches

As the NFL approaches the Nov. 10 trade deadline, speculation is swirling around players who could be on the move, and Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat is at the forefront of those discussions. According to ESPN, Sweat is drawing trade interest from multiple teams, which could lead to significant changes for the Cardinals, currently sitting at 2-5 and last in the NFC West.

The Cardinals have already begun to reshape their roster, having traded former first-round wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans. With the team struggling, it seems likely they will continue to sell off veteran assets for future draft capital, and Sweat could be the next to go. The 29-year-old defensive end signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract with Arizona in 2025, but his future with the team has become uncertain, especially after he reportedly requested a trade following the firing of head coach Jonathan Gannon, who had previously coached him in Philadelphia.

Sweat's performance has been noteworthy; he recorded a career-high 12 sacks in his first season with the Cardinals in 2025, and while he has only two sacks so far this season, he remains a valuable asset. His contract runs through 2028, but there are no guaranteed salaries after 2026, making him a more attractive option for teams looking to add depth without long-term financial commitments.

The Dallas Cowboys are among the teams reportedly interested in acquiring Sweat. Jerry Jones has been proactive in improving his team's defense, recently trading for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. The Cowboys' defense has struggled, ranking among the worst in the league in several categories, including total yards allowed and third-down conversion rates. Adding Sweat could provide a much-needed boost to a pass rush that has been underwhelming, tied for the fourth-fewest sacks in the NFL.

Potential fits for Sweat's talents

Another potential landing spot for Sweat could be the Green Bay Packers, where Jonathan Gannon now serves as the defensive coordinator. Gannon's familiarity with Sweat could facilitate a reunion, especially as the Packers look to strengthen their defense with the return of star edge rusher Micah Parsons. Although the Packers currently have a solid pass rush, they may see Sweat as a way to enhance their defensive capabilities further.

Once the Hype Clears

The Buffalo Bills are also in the mix, as they aim to capitalize on their Super Bowl window with quarterback Josh Allen leading the charge. Despite their offensive prowess, the Bills' defense has struggled, ranking 30th in points allowed per game. Sweat could provide an immediate impact as a pass rusher, helping the Bills address their defensive shortcomings as they prepare for a playoff push.

With the trade deadline looming, the situation surrounding Josh Sweat is one to watch closely. His potential departure from Arizona could reshape not only the Cardinals' roster but also the defensive dynamics of several teams looking to bolster their playoff aspirations. As teams weigh their options, Sweat's name is likely to remain a hot topic in the lead-up to the deadline.
