Harbaugh's Trade Attempt Backfires as Bears Land Jeffery Simmons
In a bold and controversial move, John Harbaugh attempted to circumvent the NFL's unwritten trade protocols in a bid to acquire star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans. The New York Giants head coach directly contacted Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk, bypassing the usual channels that involve general managers. This breach of etiquette, typically frowned upon in the league, stemmed from Harbaugh's desperation following the trade of Dexter Lawrence, which left a significant gap in the Giants' defensive lineup.
However, Harbaugh's gamble did not pay off. Instead of donning a Giants jersey, Simmons is now a member of the Chicago Bears, who secured his services by sending a hefty package to Tennessee. The Bears parted with their first-round picks in 2027 and 2028, along with a fourth-round selection, while also receiving a fifth-round pick in 2028 as part of the deal. The Giants, on the other hand, were left empty-handed as Strunk refused to overstep her general manager, Mike Borgonzi, in the trade process.
The implications of this trade are significant for the Bears, instantly transforming their defensive capabilities. Simmons, a four-time Pro Bowler, is known for his ability to dominate offensive lines, evidenced by his impressive performance this season where he logged four pressures against double teams—more than any other player. In stark contrast, the rest of the Bears' defense managed only 14 such pressures collectively, underscoring why general manager Ryan Poles deemed the cost necessary to bring Simmons on board.
Simmons sets the tone for teammates
Simmons wasted no time in making his presence felt in Chicago. He has already set a competitive tone in the locker room, urging his new teammates to capitalize on any double teams he draws. "If I draw double teams, they must get to the quarterback," he stated, emphasizing his readiness to contribute immediately. Simmons's passion and leadership are clear, as he expressed a strong desire to help the team succeed right away: "This team believes in what they have here, and they want it right now. My game, my passion, my energy, my leadership, I can only help this team even more than what it’s got."
That's the Call
Poles views Simmons as a crucial piece for a potential Super Bowl run, referencing a trend among championship teams since 2018 that highlights the importance of having a top-tier interior defensive lineman. "If you do the research, Super Bowl teams, you go back to 2018, since then they all have what we call a red-level interior defensive lineman," Poles remarked. This insight reflects a strategic approach to roster construction that aims to position the Bears as serious contenders.
As the Bears prepare for their next challenge against the Seattle Seahawks on November 2, Simmons is still acclimating to the playbook but is eager to make an impact. Harbaugh's attempt to manipulate the trade system ultimately backfired, providing the Bears with a key asset that could reshape their defensive strategy and elevate their chances in the playoff race. The rest of the league will now have to contend with the new reality of a strengthened Bears defense, thanks to a trade that Harbaugh's overreach inadvertently facilitated.
