Lions Eye Tyler Allgeier to Bolster Running Back Depth
The Detroit Lions are gearing up to be active buyers as the NFL trade deadline approaches. While much of the speculation has revolved around bolstering their defense, there’s a compelling case for the Lions to consider adding depth to their running back position. One name that has surfaced in discussions is Tyler Allgeier, currently with the Arizona Cardinals.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggests that Allgeier could be a valuable addition for the Lions. The potential trade would not require a significant investment, as the Cardinals are likely to accept a mid-Day 3 draft pick in exchange for the former 1,000-yard rusher. This move would not only benefit the Lions by providing a reliable backup but also help the Cardinals save on cap space, freeing up $1.6 million in 2026 and $5.2 million in 2027.
Currently, Jahmyr Gibbs has been the focal point of the Lions' rushing attack, with 134 attempts so far this season. His backup, Sione Vaki, has only managed 16 carries, highlighting a significant gap in the running game. Gibbs is on pace for an astonishing 379 rushing attempts this year, a number that raises concerns about his long-term durability. The Lions had initially hoped to have Isiah Pacheco as a reliable backup, but injuries have derailed that plan, leaving them in a precarious position as they head into the latter part of the season.
Allgeier, a former fifth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons, has experience in a backup role, having played behind Bijan Robinson. His familiarity with the demands of being a secondary option could make him an ideal fit for the Lions. The Cardinals, currently struggling with a 2-5 record, are also looking to shift their focus towards rookie running back Jeremiah Love, which could further limit Allgeier's opportunities in Arizona.
The View from the Cheap Seats
With the Cardinals potentially turning to rookie quarterback Carson Beck, they may be more inclined to offload Allgeier if the right offer comes along. For the Lions, acquiring a player like Allgeier could be crucial in managing Gibbs' workload and ensuring he remains fresh for the playoff push.
In summary, as the trade deadline looms, the Lions must weigh their options carefully. Adding Tyler Allgeier could provide the depth they need at running back, allowing them to maintain a balanced offensive attack while keeping their star player healthy for the crucial games ahead.
