Arsenal's red card appeal likely to fail, says Dermot Gallagher

Arsenal's red card appeal likely to fail, says Dermot Gallagher

Max Dowman received a red card during Arsenal's surprising Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town after kicking out at Harrison Neal. This incident has led Arsenal to appeal the decision, with documents due by 1pm on Thursday, as they hope for a ruling before their upcoming match against Liverpool. However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher is skeptical about the appeal's success, stating that the aggressive nature of Dowman's actions will likely lead to the appeal failing.

Dowman was dismissed for violent conduct after retaliating against Neal, who had made a strong challenge on him late in the fourth-round tie, which Arsenal ultimately lost on penalties. Gallagher, speaking to Sky Sports News, expressed his belief that the intent behind Dowman's actions was clear, stating, "I don't think it will be successful because of the aggressiveness of Dowman. He knows what he's doing. He almost brings his knee up in a kicking action."

While Gallagher supports the red card decision, he also pointed out that Arsenal should have been awarded a free-kick for Neal's tackle, which he deemed reckless. "Although Neal gets the ball, he's too aggressive," Gallagher explained. "It's a reckless challenge and he's had little regard to the safety of Dowman. Neal is not bothered whether he catches him afterwards. He was always going to get Dowman. That's enough for a free-kick and a yellow card."

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson offered a different perspective, suggesting that the red card was harsh. He argued that Dowman must learn to cope with strong challenges as he progresses in his career. Merson noted, "The tackle from the lad is an old-fashioned tackle. He gets the ball, follows through at the same time. In a way, I would say it's a great tackle. And then Dowman's retaliating. His foot's got caught. I don't think it's as bad as what everybody says."

Merson also highlighted the challenges young players face at big clubs like Arsenal, where they are often subjected to intense scrutiny and pressure. He remarked, "The kid's 16 years of age. Let's not get away from it. My worry is that at Arsenal, and when you play for one of the big clubs, you get told once or twice, and that is it. He's going to get that for the whole of his career. People are going to look at the game now, and they're going to go, 'Right, we've got to upset him.'"

Arteta's support for young players questioned

As Dowman left the pitch, Mikel Arteta reportedly had a conversation with him, which Merson criticized, suggesting that the manager should have offered more support. Arteta, when asked about his comments to Dowman, stated, "It was something that we discussed before the game," but did not elaborate further. He acknowledged the need for Dowman to learn from the incident, indicating that they had prepared for the emotional challenges of the match.

Merson concluded that Arteta's reaction to Dowman was not appropriate, especially considering the player's age and potential. Fellow pundit Jobi McAnuff echoed this sentiment, stating, "I can't understand the reaction. Arteta probably feels it was petulant, naive which I think it is. It is frustration from Dowman, but when you see the reaction from Arteta... we have to remember he's 16. Yes, he's a fantastic talent, but he will make mistakes along the way."

The Final Whistle

As Arsenal navigates this situation, the focus will be on how Dowman learns from this experience. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges young players face in high-pressure environments. Dowman's potential is clear, but he must adapt to the physicality of the game and manage his reactions to avoid similar situations in the future. Arteta's handling of the situation will also be scrutinized, as the club looks to nurture its young talent while competing at the highest levels.

Ultimately, the outcome of Arsenal's appeal remains uncertain, but Gallagher's insights suggest that the club may need to prepare for the possibility of Dowman's suspension. The incident highlights the ongoing debate about player safety and the standards of officiating in football, particularly in youth competitions. As Arsenal aims to bounce back against Liverpool, the lessons learned from this experience will be crucial for both Dowman and the club moving forward.
