Nebraska's Offensive Struggles Cost Them Against Oregon

Nebraska's Offensive Struggles Cost Them Against Oregon

Nebraska let a golden opportunity slip through its fingers in a heart-wrenching loss to Oregon. After a chaotic day in college football, the Huskers were in a prime position to make a statement and enter the playoff conversation, but instead delivered a performance reminiscent of their struggles over the past two decades. With this defeat, Nebraska is now just one close loss away from tying the record for the most one-score losses in college football history over the last 20 years.

The defense showed promise, delivering a strong effort throughout the game, but the offense and special teams faltered when it mattered most. Nebraska must learn to play more complementary football in the final stretch of the season if they hope to regain their footing and compete at a top-25 level. The Huskers had opportunities in the last two weeks to secure upset victories, but their familiar failures have kept them from achieving that goal.

The game started poorly for Nebraska, which struggled to find its rhythm early on. Six of their first seven drives ended in punts, with the only exception being an interception thrown by Anthony Colandrea deep in their own territory that fortunately did not lead to any points for the Ducks. In stark contrast to their previous game against Indiana, where they scored 10 points and amassed 150 yards in the first quarter, Nebraska could only manage 47 yards against Oregon in the opening frame.

Offensively, Nebraska was uninspired for much of the game, only showing signs of life on the final drive of the first half. Head coach Dana Holgorsen needs to find a way to ignite the offense when it struggles, as the talent on this roster is too significant to justify nine punts in a single game. While they did convert a critical 3rd-and-22 late in the second quarter, the overall approach was too conservative, limiting their chances to score.

Winning on early downs was crucial for Nebraska, especially considering Oregon's struggles in that area. The Ducks entered the game ranked 112th in early-down success rate allowed, yet they held Nebraska to a mere 24% success rate on early downs. This lack of efficiency forced the Huskers into long third-down situations, averaging nearly nine yards to go. Although Nebraska managed to convert 7 of 17 third downs against one of the nation's best defenses, their inability to sustain drives ultimately cost them the game.

Defensive fatigue and offensive responsibility

The game plan against Indiana had been executed flawlessly, limiting the Hoosiers to their fewest plays since 2007. However, Oregon ran 76 plays from scrimmage, the most against Nebraska since a similar number by Colorado earlier this season. Head coach Matt Rhule pointed to defensive fatigue as a factor in the fourth quarter, where the Ducks capitalized on two scoring drives led by Dylan Raiola, who executed 37 plays in that period. The offense needed to do more to give the defense a breather, especially late in the game.

Special teams have been a significant issue for Nebraska this season, with penalties negating crucial plays at inopportune times. Against Oregon, the mistakes were more subtle but still detrimental. A bad snap led to a kneel-down by Archie Wilson, while the decision to return kickoffs instead of taking a fair catch cost the team valuable yardage. These lost yards could have made a difference in a game where every inch mattered, particularly given the offensive struggles in the first half.

What the Scoreboard Won't Tell You

As Nebraska heads into their bye week, the timing couldn't be better. The return of Jamal Rule is essential for revitalizing the rushing attack, and the looming injury to Riley Van Poppel could impact the defensive line's effectiveness. The Huskers ran out of steam against Oregon, and adding Rule back into the rotation will be crucial for their chances moving forward.

Most observers expected Nebraska to be sitting at 5-2 at this point in the season. Instead, they find themselves in a precarious position, having squandered opportunities to improve their standing. Matt Rhule and his coaching staff must find a way to turn these close losses into victories against tougher opponents in the Big Ten if they hope to salvage their season.
