Messi's brilliance leads Inter Miami to playoff victory over NYCFC
Lionel Messi showcased his playmaking prowess once again as he assisted in a goal and contributed to Inter Miami's 2-0 victory over New York City FC, ensuring their spot in the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs. The match, held on Wednesday, was a crucial win for Miami, marking their second consecutive victory since Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez took over as head coach last month. With five games remaining in the regular season, this win guarantees Miami at least a place in the wild card round of the playoffs.
Messi, who returned to the squad after an emotional send-off with the Argentina national team, was instrumental in both goals during the first half. In the 20th minute, he received the ball just outside the penalty area and deftly passed it to Rodrigo De Paul. De Paul then found Luis Suarez on the byline, who delivered a low cross that German Berterame converted for his first goal since May.
The second goal came just before halftime, showcasing Messi's ability to draw defenders. Berterame initiated a counter-attack and, despite a mishit pass, found Messi. The Argentine superstar attracted three defenders before laying the ball off to De Paul, who finished with precision, sending the ball high into the net.
The second half saw no goals, but Messi continued to threaten, nearly scoring with a curling shot that went over the bar. As the match approached its conclusion, he played a short corner to De Paul, whose powerful shot was brilliantly saved by NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese, who tipped the ball onto the post.
NYCFC's late-game struggles exposed
New York City FC, struggling with just one win in their last eleven matches, had a chance to score a consolation goal late in the game when Ian Fray fouled Talles Magno in the box. However, Dayne St Clair made a remarkable save, diving to his right to deny the penalty.
Let's Call It What It Is
Gonzalez expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, particularly their defensive organization, stating, "I really liked how we handled dropping back into defensive shape. We didn’t get caught out on the counter and were very aggressive, breaking up plays whenever a sudden transition from them looked likely." He acknowledged that while there is still room for improvement, the team is making progress.
With this victory, Inter Miami solidifies its position in the Eastern Conference, maintaining second place and ensuring home-field advantage in the playoffs. Despite first-place Nashville being out of reach, Miami's recent form suggests they are peaking at the right time as they head into the postseason.
