Titans' Cam Ward Faces Criticism Amid Calls for Bench Time
The Tennessee Titans are enduring a challenging 2026 season, having failed to secure a victory in their first five games. At the center of this turmoil is quarterback Cam Ward, who has faced significant criticism for his performance during his sophomore year in the NFL. On the Fitz & Whit podcast, Fitzpatrick expressed his belief that the Titans should consider benching Ward temporarily and allow veteran backup Mitchell Trubisky to step in. He argues that this could provide Ward with a valuable opportunity to observe the game from a different perspective and work on his skills away from the pressure of starting. "I actually believe in Cam Ward... I think the best thing for his development is to put him on the bench for the next few games," Fitzpatrick stated. He emphasized that watching a seasoned player like Trubisky could help Ward refine his approach to the game.
Ward, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft, has struggled to find his footing in the league. His rookie season was marked by a dismal 3-14 record, and expectations were high for his second year. However, the 2026 season has not started well for him, as he has completed only 98 of 155 pass attempts for 896 yards and three touchdowns. Analysts have pointed out significant inconsistencies in his technique, particularly with his footwork and his ability to remain composed under pressure. According to reports, Ward has one of the lowest completion rates in the NFL when under duress, sitting at just 36.6%.
Fitzpatrick shared his own experience of being benched during his time with the Texans in 2014, noting that the two games he spent watching backup Ryan Mallett play provided him with critical insights into his own game. Mallett's brief stint as a starter ended when he suffered an injury, allowing Fitzpatrick to return and ultimately improve his performance.
Ward's determination amid adversity
Despite the mounting criticism, Ward remains committed to turning things around. After a recent loss to the Houston Texans, he firmly rejected any notion of being a loser, stating, "The record may say that we are right now. But at the end of the day, you have got to go through some stuff to try to get wins." He believes in his capabilities and the potential of his teammates, expressing confidence that they will eventually find success.

The Titans are currently under the leadership of a new head coach, Robert Saleh, and a new offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll.
