India U17 Women's Team Aims for Historic AFC Qualification Against Malaysia
The India U17 Women's football team is poised to make history as they prepare to face hosts Malaysia in a pivotal AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup qualifier on Sunday. A draw will be enough for India to secure their spot in the tournament, marking a significant achievement for the team. The stakes are high as both teams enter this decisive match with six points from their previous two fixtures, having won both without conceding a goal. However, India boasts a commanding goal difference of 16, compared to Malaysia's five, giving them the upper hand heading into this final Group E clash.
Joakim Alexandersson's squad needs only to avoid defeat to finish as group winners. A draw would leave both teams level on points and head-to-head records, but India's superior goal difference would ensure they top the group. Conversely, Malaysia must secure a victory to claim the group's sole qualifying spot. Only the eight group winners from the qualifiers will advance to the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup in China in 2027, joining the likes of defending champions DPR Korea, Japan, Australia, and hosts China, who qualified directly.
India's previous performance in the tournament was commendable, as they reached the quarter-finals in the last edition, making history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. A draw or victory on Sunday would not only secure qualification but also make India the first team to qualify for back-to-back Women's Asian Cups across any age category, including the senior level.
Despite the favorable position, Alexandersson has made it clear that his team will not adopt a defensive mindset. "We have to go into the game trying to win. With young players, it is difficult to tell them that a draw will be enough. We will try to win the game, but at the same time, we have to attack with a little more sense and find the right balance," he stated. This approach reflects the team's confidence and determination to perform at their best.
Celebrating key player contributions
India's journey to this point has been marked by impressive victories, including a record-breaking 14-0 win against Iraq, the largest margin of victory for an Indian U17 women's team, followed by a solid 2-0 win over Syria. Anushka Kumari has been a standout performer, scoring five goals against Iraq and adding two more against Syria. Her contributions have been crucial, but she emphasizes the importance of teamwork. "It feels very good to score seven goals, but it is not only about me. My teammates are creating the chances and giving me the passes, and I am trying to convert them. It is a team effort," she remarked.
As the match approaches, Alexandersson has opted for a lighter training regimen to ensure the players are well-rested. The focus has shifted entirely to the upcoming match against Malaysia, with the team scheduled to train under floodlights the night before. "I made the decision to give them some rest because I felt we had been training and playing games every day. Before the last game, I felt it was important to save some energy," he explained.
That's the Call
The Young Tigresses also benefit from the experience of 13 players from the previous U17 cycle that qualified for the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup in 2026. Alexandersson noted the value of this experience, stating, "They know what it is like to play these kinds of games. Most of them are now better at communicating, and they try to support the new players in a good way. The way they play also brings a certain calmness to the whole team, and that is very important."
As the team prepares for this crucial encounter, Alexandersson has reminded his players that their previous successes will mean little if they do not maintain their standards in this final match. "Even if people outside think we are the favorites, we must always stay humble, whoever we are facing. In every sport, you have to be humble and respect the opponent," he cautioned. The Young Tigresses are ready to take on the challenge, with their eyes set firmly on qualification and making history for Indian women's football.
