Chettri Calls for Fan Support as Indian Women Face Russia
The Indian women's football team is set to make history as they prepare to play their first international match against Russia at Salt Lake Stadium. Head coach Crispin Chettri has called on fans to support the team, stating, "They (the players) deserve that at least." This match comes on the heels of the men's team’s high-profile friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay, highlighting the growing interest in Indian football.
Chettri recognizes the significance of this match against a higher-ranked opponent, as India, currently ranked 69th, faces off against world No. 27 Russia. He noted that competing against such teams is vital for the development of Indian football, allowing players to learn not only on the pitch but also about the professionalism required off it. "Playing against higher-ranked teams is always good for us because we want to develop as a football nation," he explained after a training session.
However, the coach faces challenges as several key players are unavailable due to club commitments, particularly with teams like East Bengal prioritizing their AFC and IWL campaigns. Despite this setback, Chettri sees the match as an opportunity to expose younger players to international competition, which is crucial for building a squad capable of competing in the 2029 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
"We have a very young side. I think we already know we are going through that transition phase, thinking about 2029," Chettri remarked. With an average squad age of just 23 years and the youngest player being only 19, the team is in a developmental phase. Chettri expressed confidence in the balance of the squad, which includes experienced players like Sangita Basfore and Renu, alongside promising youngsters.
India has faced Russia twice before, with the first encounter resulting in an 8-0 defeat in 2021. However, the team showed improvement in their last meeting, losing 2-0 at the Pink Ladies Cup in Sharjah. This upcoming match presents a chance for young talents like goalkeeper Nandini and winger Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam to establish themselves at the senior level, while forward Renu returns from injury, adding depth to the squad.
When the Noise Dies Down
Russia's head coach Yuri Krasnozhan is focused on the present, dismissing past results as mere statistics. He stated, "The previous game is history; it’s just statistics. We are preparing to get the win in this game." The Russian team, which also includes several young players, is looking to make a statement in this match, having arrived in Kolkata with limited preparation time due to their recent travel.
As both teams prepare for this youthful encounter, the match promises to be a significant step for the Indian women's team in their journey towards greater recognition and success in international football. Chettri's call for fan support underscores the importance of community backing in fostering the growth of women's football in India.
