Joao Felix shines at Al-Nassr but eyes a return to Europe
Joao Felix has emerged as a pivotal figure at Al-Nassr, contributing to the club's status as one of the most talked-about teams in Saudi soccer. Since his arrival from Chelsea in 2025, Felix has undergone a remarkable transformation, showcasing his talents and becoming an integral part of both his club and the Portugal national team. Under the guidance of new coach Jorge Jesus, Felix has found a more influential role, which has been crucial for his development.
The Portuguese forward's resurgence is one of the standout narratives of Al-Nassr's recent campaign. After a series of challenging stints at clubs like Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, and Milan, Felix has finally rediscovered the consistency that once made him one of Europe's most promising young talents. In the 2025-26 season, he finished with an impressive tally of 26 goals and 19 assists across 47 appearances, playing a key role in Al-Nassr's title-winning efforts. His form has carried into the new season, where he has already netted four goals and provided three assists in his first few matches.
Felix's improvement has also been evident on the international stage, where he has scored in each of Portugal's first three matches during the current international period. His transition into a more central second-striker role has allowed him to exert greater influence on games. "Playing as a second striker suits me; it’s not like playing on the left wing or out wide," Felix noted, emphasizing the importance of playing in his natural position.
The twist in Felix's story is that his outstanding performances in Saudi Arabia may have reignited his ambitions to return to European football. The 26-year-old has expressed a desire to compete in European competitions again, particularly the UEFA Champions League, once his time in the Saudi Pro League concludes. "I’m very happy at Al Nassr. This will be my second year," he told Diario AS, while also revealing his thoughts on the future. "I’ll be 27 at the end of the season. I’m planning to return to Europe, though perhaps not immediately. I don’t know if it will be at the end of this season or the end of next, but I’m eager to return to Europe, to play in the Champions League again, and to compete there again."
Felix's aspirations are closely tied to a familiar destination: Barcelona. According to reports, his primary goal is to return to the Catalan club, where he spent the 2023-24 season on loan from Atletico Madrid. During that time, he made 44 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. Despite not securing a permanent move, Felix has fond memories of his time at Camp Nou and has openly stated that playing for Barcelona was a childhood dream.

"Good ones, very good ones. In the end, we didn’t win anything, but simply playing for Barcelona made me very happy," he reflected. His agent, Jorge Mendes, has reportedly communicated Felix's desire to return to Barcelona, potentially on a free transfer when his Al-Nassr contract expires in June 2027. Felix is even willing to consider a lower salary to facilitate a move back to Spain.
As Felix continues to shine in Saudi Arabia, the intersection of his current success and future ambitions raises questions about the evolving landscape of football. With Al-Nassr's star power and Felix's growing reputation, the dynamics of player movement and ambition in the sport are more relevant than ever. The implications of his potential return to Europe could reshape not only his career but also the competitive landscape in both Saudi and European football.
