Hopkins' header lifts Springville to overtime win over Timpview
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Springville High School's Elizabeth Hopkins scored a golden goal with a diving header, leading her team to a 2-1 overtime victory against Timpview. The match, held on Thursday night, showcased not only the talent of the players but also the strategic coaching of Todd Hollingshead, who had introduced diving headers into practice as a fun bonding exercise.
The game began with Springville taking an early lead when Sarah Penrod scored 13 minutes in, converting a cross from Savannah Johnston. However, Timpview responded with a goal from Ava Badger early in the second half, leveling the score and shifting the momentum in their favor. Despite this, Springville maintained their composure and continued to apply pressure.
As the match progressed into overtime, the tension mounted. Springville had previously struggled in overtime situations, entering this game with an 0-6 record in such scenarios this season. However, the team’s recent form, having won four of their last five matches, gave them a renewed sense of confidence. Coach Hollingshead emphasized the importance of belief and teamwork, stating, "The girls continued to believe in each other and play for each other. It’s so easy when you lose in overtime to let that wear you down, but the girls have been great. They’ve stayed really positive."
The decisive moment came in the final minute of the first overtime period. After a near miss from Trevi Jackson on a breakaway, which was expertly saved by Timpview's goalkeeper, Springville earned a corner kick. Hopkins capitalized on this opportunity, heading in the corner from Penrod to secure the win. Her reaction was one of pure joy, as she recalled, "Oh my gosh, it was amazing, and then I just like got jumped on. I was like, ‘I can’t breathe.’" This goal not only marked her first of the season but also symbolized a turning point for the Red Devils.
Once the Hype Clears
The victory was a testament to the team's growth and resilience. Hollingshead noted that despite the ups and downs of the season, the players had remained focused on their goals and continued to work hard in practice. "We kind of told the girls all along, ‘We know you’re a talented team. You know you’re a talented team. Just believe in each other. Give 100% effort, and then we’ll have a real chance to finish strong,’" he said.
As Springville prepares for the playoffs, their newfound confidence and ability to perform under pressure will make them a formidable opponent. The combination of skill, teamwork, and a positive mindset could very well lead them to further success in the upcoming matches. This victory not only halts their overtime jinx but also sets the stage for a promising playoff run, as they look to build on this momentum and capitalize on their recent performances.
