College Football Viewership Drops 11% in 2026 Season

College Football Viewership Drops 11% in 2026 Season

The 2026 college football season has kicked off with disappointing ratings, as overall viewership has dropped by 11% compared to the first four weeks of 2025. According to Nielsen data, FBS broadcasts are averaging 1.7 million viewers this season, a stark contrast to the previous year's figures. Notably, the highly anticipated matchup between Ohio State and Texas attracted 14 million viewers, down from 16.6 million the year before.

While NFL ratings have remained relatively stable, with some networks experiencing slight increases, the decline in college football viewership is puzzling. Typically, ratings dips can be attributed to factors such as weaker matchups, political controversies, or increased competition from other television programming. However, this season's ratings drop does not seem to align with these common explanations.

Each of the first four weeks featured at least one marquee matchup, including LSU vs. Clemson, Ohio State vs. Texas, and Texas vs. Tennessee. Despite these high-profile games, the audience numbers have not reflected the excitement surrounding them. The Ohio State vs. Texas game, in particular, is noteworthy, as it was expected to draw significant interest given the teams' storied histories and the hype surrounding the players.

Several factors may have contributed to the decline in viewership. Last season, the Ohio State vs. Texas matchup occurred in Week 1, when anticipation was at its peak. This year, the game was played later in the season, and the kickoff time was significantly later, starting at 7:49 p.m. ET compared to last year's noon kickoff. Late start times have become a trend this season, with other games also experiencing delays that likely impacted viewership.

Another potential reason for the decline is the expanded College Football Playoff format. The introduction of a 12-team playoff has lessened the stakes of early-season losses, meaning teams like Ohio State, currently ranked No. 5 with a 3-1 record, may not feel as pressured to perform at their best early in the season. This shift could lead to a decrease in viewer engagement as fans may perceive that the outcomes of early games are less critical to postseason success.

When the Noise Dies Down

Longtime fans of college football may also point to broader changes in the sport's landscape, including conference realignment and the influence of the NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) era. These developments have altered the traditional connections between fans and players, potentially diminishing the sport's appeal.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether these trends will continue. The upcoming matchup between No. 4 Ohio State and No. 14 Iowa will be a crucial test for viewership, especially as it competes with the MLB postseason for audience attention. If the decline in ratings persists, it may prompt television executives and conference officials to reevaluate their strategies to enhance viewer engagement and restore the excitement that college football once commanded.
