Charity match to support Roxy Thomas in her battle against cancer
This Sunday, a women's football match will take on a deeper significance as it is dedicated to Roxy Thomas, an 18-year-old player from Torquay United Women, who is currently battling a brain tumour. Diagnosed in August, Thomas is undergoing intensive treatment in Bristol after a series of operations. In a show of solidarity, her former club, Plymouth Argyle Women, will face Torquay United in the FA Women's National League Cup at Home Park, with all ticket sales going directly to support Thomas and her family.
A fundraiser has already been established to assist Thomas, raising over £22,000 to help cover various expenses, including travel and accommodation during her hospital stays, as well as loss of income during her treatment. Torquay United has expressed its unwavering support, stating that "the prayers, thoughts and best wishes of everyone here at Plainmoor remain with her, her family, friends and teammates throughout this period."
The club has committed to donating every penny raised from the match to Thomas's family, emphasizing the importance of community support during such a difficult time. Additionally, players from Torquay United will wear yellow armbands featuring her number, three, as a tribute to their teammate.
The football community has rallied around Thomas, with Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies FC previously organizing a similar initiative, donating £700 from gate receipts to her cause. The Plymouth Argyle Men's First Team has also contributed, with a donation of £1,250, while Torquay United has pledged that 20% of sales from its new women's home shirt will go to support Thomas's family.
Torquay United Women's manager, Ryan Perks, praised Thomas as a talented player and a wonderful person, stating that the team is thinking of her and her family during this challenging time. Plymouth Argyle Men's head coach, Tom Cleverley, noted that the match would be an emotional day, hoping for a strong turnout to support a brilliant cause.
