No. 17 Utah prepares for showdown against Utah State

The No. 17 Utah Utes have made a strong impression in the early stages of the season, boasting a 2-0 record with a combined score of 109-24 against Idaho and Arkansas. Under the leadership of head coach Morgan Scalley, the Utes are looking to continue their momentum as they prepare for their final nonconference clash against Utah State at Rice-Eccles Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MT on FOX.

Despite their 0-2 record, Utah State should not be underestimated. The Aggies suffered a disappointing loss to Idaho State but nearly pulled off an upset against ranked Washington, losing 16-14 in a game that showcased their defensive capabilities. The Aggies' defense has been impressive, allowing just 298.5 yards per game and limiting opponents to an average of 98 rushing yards per game. This defensive prowess was evident in their performance against Washington, where they held the Huskies to only 16 points and forced them into a challenging third-down situation.

Linebacker Harrison Taggart has emerged as a key player for Utah State, leading the team with 13 tackles in the first two games. The Aggies' defensive front, featuring players like Carson Tujague and Asher Cunningham, has also been effective in creating negative plays, recording multiple sacks and tackles for loss. This defensive unit presents a significant challenge for Utah's offense, which has been one of the best in the nation thus far.

For Utah to succeed, establishing a strong run game will be crucial. The Utes must avoid falling into long third-down situations, as Utah State's defense thrives in those scenarios. The Aggies' ability to pressure the quarterback and disrupt offensive flow could pose problems if Utah finds itself in third-and-long situations. The Utes have been effective on third downs, converting 5-of-9 attempts against Arkansas, but they will need to maintain that efficiency against a tough Utah State defense.

On the offensive side, Utah State has struggled with turnovers, throwing seven interceptions in their first two games. Quarterback Grady Brosterhous, who stepped in for the injured McCae Hillstead, showed promise against Washington, throwing for 196 yards and two touchdowns, but also contributed to the turnover issues. The Utes' aggressive defense, which has been known to create chaos for opposing offenses, will look to capitalize on these mistakes and force Utah State into unfavorable situations.

After Further Review

Utah State does have some offensive weapons, including receiver Eli Wood, who has been consistent with 12 catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Aggies' running game has struggled, averaging only 3.2 yards per carry and failing to score a rushing touchdown this season. This lack of offensive production could be detrimental against a Utah defense that has allowed just 83.5 rushing yards per game.

As the Utes prepare for this matchup, they must remain focused and avoid giving Utah State any opportunities to stay competitive. With a strong roster and a dominant start to the season, Utah is favored to win, but they must execute their game plan effectively to avoid any surprises. The Utes have not lost to Utah State in Salt Lake City since 1997, and they will look to continue that streak as they head into Big 12 play next week.
