Maresca acknowledges player fatigue as Manchester City eyes Champions League

Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca has openly acknowledged the challenges faced by players returning from the World Cup, particularly in terms of fatigue as they gear up for the club's Champions League opener against Porto. Speaking at the Dragao Stadium, Maresca stated that finding form early in the season "was not easy" for his World Cup players, a sentiment echoed by star striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland, who has already netted three goals in three league matches, highlighted his own struggles with preparation, noting that he did not participate in any warm-up games following Norway's impressive run to the World Cup quarterfinals. "The new season started and I didn’t even have a pre-season. I normally have a bit of pre-season but this time, just nothing," Haaland remarked, emphasizing the physical and mental challenges that come with such a demanding schedule.

The striker pointed out that while the physical aspect of the game will eventually come back if players can stay injury-free, the mental sharpness required to perform at the highest level is equally crucial. "We need to have that eager feeling to go back but we don’t because there is no time to properly stay away from football because there are so many games and the season is longer," he explained. Despite the challenges, Haaland maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging the privilege of playing football year-round, but also expressed the need for breaks to recharge.

Managing player fatigue for long-term success

Maresca supported Haaland's observations, stating, "It’s not easy for them. It’s not easy for Erling, it’s not easy for most of the players that they continue to play for their international team." He emphasized the importance of managing player workloads, suggesting that rest could be beneficial, whether that means sitting out a game or taking a week off, depending on the circumstances.

The coach also noted the difficulty in maintaining focus on long-term goals while managing the day-to-day demands of the season. "To be focused on the day by day makes it very complicated to think where we can be in February, March, April in terms of expectation. The most important thing is to see that we are improving game after game," he stated.

As Manchester City prepares for their Champions League clash, the implications of player fatigue and the need for strategic rest will be critical in determining their success in both domestic and European competitions. Maresca's insights reflect a broader concern within football regarding the balance between player welfare and the relentless demands of the modern game, particularly for those who have recently participated in high-stakes international tournaments.
