Pochettino's Roster Decisions: Banks' Dilemma and Sullivan's Rise

Mauricio Pochettino's first roster announcement for the U.S. men's national team since the World Cup is set to feature a youthful lineup, but it will notably exclude 19-year-old German-American defender Noahkai Banks. During a video conference with reporters, Pochettino revealed that he has been in contact with Banks over the past two months following the USA's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Belgium in the round of 16. However, the Hawaii-born center-back has yet to make a decision regarding which national team he will represent, leaving Pochettino unable to consider him for the upcoming training camp. "Noahkai didn't change his mind and is waiting — still no decision, and of course we cannot consider him for the next camp," Pochettino stated ahead of the U.S. team's exhibitions against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada later this month.

Pochettino, who recently signed a four-year contract with the U.S. Soccer Federation, indicated that his squad will blend experienced World Cup players with promising newcomers who could play pivotal roles in the lead-up to the 2030 World Cup. Among the exciting prospects is 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who has been making headlines with the Philadelphia Union since the MLS resumed after the World Cup break. Sullivan has scored in each of the Union's last three matches, showcasing his potential impact on the national team.

In a recent appearance on Alexi Lalas' State of the Union podcast, Sullivan expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, "I think I could come into that game on the right side and make a difference." He acknowledged that while the team is not his yet, he remains hopeful for future call-ups. Pochettino seemed to reference Sullivan's comments when discussing the wealth of young talent emerging from Philadelphia, including Sullivan's older brother, Quinn, and other promising players like Nathan Harriel, Neil Pierre, and Frankie Westfield.

"We are very happy about to have all these potential good players," Pochettino remarked. However, he also stressed the need for caution when integrating young talent into the squad. "When you are young, of course, you need to be confident, you need to have the trust in yourself and belief that you can perform and you can do well. But the thing is, there is a limit. The balance is the most important, and one of our responsibilities is to protect these guys."

Navigating the pressures on young talent

Pochettino's concern reflects the pressures young players face when they are thrust into the spotlight too soon. He cautioned against the dangers of overhyping young talent, referencing Lionel Messi as an example of someone who has earned the right to speak with confidence due to his extraordinary achievements.

Another young player who may receive his first senior team call-up is Crystal Palace forward Zavier Gozo. Pochettino had included Gozo on his provisional World Cup roster but did not select him for the final squad. With the U.S. under-23 team inactive until November, Pochettino has the opportunity to evaluate a range of young players. However, he remains focused on winning, especially after the U.S. suffered defeats to Mexico and Canada under his management.

"I think we cannot bring a whole squad of young players," he said. "They need to have next to them some guys with experience already." This balancing act between youth and experience will be crucial as Pochettino navigates the challenges ahead, aiming to build a competitive squad that can perform on the international stage.
