Trent Green: A motivated Patrick Mahomes poses a serious threat

During a recent interview with Ed Easton Jr. from Chiefs Wire, former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green shared his thoughts on the recovery of current star quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the 2026 NFL season approaches. Green was in Bloomington, Indiana, for the unveiling of the Dr Pepper "Fan Wall of Fame" at his alma mater, Indiana University, where he expressed his excitement about both the event and Mahomes' return to the field.

"Well, first off, I'm fired up. I'm excited about it. Nobody does college football fandom better than Dr Pepper," Green stated. He highlighted the long-standing relationship between Dr Pepper and college football, noting the significance of being back at his university, especially as they celebrate their status as the defending undefeated National Champions.

Green, who has closely followed the Chiefs' progress, particularly Mahomes' recovery from a serious knee injury, shared his belief that a motivated Mahomes is a dangerous Mahomes. "I always say that a motivated Patrick Mahomes is a dangerous Patrick Mahomes," he remarked. Green pointed out that throughout Mahomes' career, he has consistently found ways to prove doubters wrong, whether in college or the NFL. He noted Mahomes' impressive records before turning 30, including win totals, yardage, completion percentages, and playoff performances.

Mahomes' recovery sets high expectations

Last season, Mahomes threw for 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over 14 games before suffering a torn ACL and LCL during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Green expressed optimism about Mahomes' readiness for the upcoming season, stating, "I like a motivated Patrick Mahomes. I think he's gonna have a good year, and I think he will be starting Week One against Denver on Monday night. I've seen him take every rep at practice."

Green elaborated on Mahomes' recovery process, explaining that the quarterback underwent surgery shortly after his injury, with a clear timeline set for his return. "Listening to his interviews and comments, and from the chance to talk to him through the preseason broadcast, I do see every indication that he will be ready for Week 1," Green added. He praised Mahomes' commitment to his rehabilitation, noting that the quarterback had a plan in place from the beginning to ensure he would be ready for the season opener.

Reflecting on the challenges of recovering from such injuries, Green shared his own experiences with similar knee issues, emphasizing the mental and physical toll it can take. "I know the amount of work that goes into that. I know nonstop how lonely those days can be and how hard it is mentally when you're not making the type of progress as quickly as you want to make it," he said. Despite the difficulties, Green believes Mahomes has shown remarkable resilience and determination in his recovery, stating, "If you watch him the way I've watched him in practice, it looks like the regular Patrick Mahomes. It doesn't look like a guy who's nine months removed from one of the most devastating injuries you can have."
