Farioli hints at Napoli future while praising Allegri's legacy

Francesco Farioli, the head coach of Porto, has not ruled out the possibility of coaching Napoli in the future, a statement that has sparked interest ahead of his team's Champions League clash with the Partenopei. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Farioli praised Massimiliano Allegri, calling him one of the greatest reference points in Italian football, highlighting the respect he holds for his fellow coach.

Farioli was asked about past reports suggesting that Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli's president, had considered him for the managerial role at the club. With a hint of humor, he responded, "De Laurentiis is a fan of mine? Napoli’s interest in me has expired under the statute of limitations? Well, after the statute of limitations, there’s nothing to add… In the future, who knows, we’ll see." This coy response indicates that while he is currently focused on his role at Porto, he remains open to future opportunities.

The 37-year-old coach has made a name for himself abroad, notably winning the Portuguese league title with Porto last season. Despite his success, he has yet to manage in Serie A, which adds an intriguing layer to his potential future with Napoli. As Porto prepares to face Napoli, Farioli acknowledged the quality of their opponents, stating, "In a game like this, it’s difficult to talk about favourites. Napoli have quality even with a few absentees, and they’re a strong, competitive team. But so are we."

Farioli's comments reflect a deep understanding of the competitive landscape in Italian football. He noted Napoli's recent successes, including their two Scudetti in recent years, and emphasized the need for his team to capitalize on their chances. He remarked, "We want to go out with great determination. Napoli are a club that has grown a lot, and under De Laurentiis, they’ve been in the Champions League for years."

Navigating injuries and tactical adjustments

In discussing injuries, Farioli mentioned that both teams have absences to contend with, indicating that preparation is key. He stated, "We tried to work out who their starters might be, and we’ll be ready. But we’ve thought more about our own line-up than theirs. We have our absences too and need the right solutions. It will be a game of chess: every time a piece moves, adjustments have to be made."

Farioli also defended Napoli's recent form, suggesting that their attacking output has been impressive despite some disappointing results. He pointed out, "If you look at the xG, Napoli’s attacking output is high-level. It’s a team that creates a lot, but some results haven’t reflected its performances. That’s happened to us in the Champions League too. That’s football."

What the Scoreboard Won't Tell You

Reflecting on his own career, Farioli expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had across various leagues, stating, "I’ve been lucky to work in many countries, to find clubs that gave me an opportunity six or seven years ago to start out, and others more recently that let me have high-level experiences in Europe. Rather than assess what I haven’t had yet, I look at my experience so far with great gratitude to those who gave me this opportunity."

As he looks ahead to the match, Farioli's respect for the Italian coaching landscape is evident. He acknowledged the presence of many talented coaches in Italy, including Allegri, whom he regards as a significant influence. He concluded, "There are a thousand examples, like my friend Alvini. We live a few kilometres apart, and even though he arrived in Serie A late, he’s doing really well and surprising everyone. Then there are experienced coaches like Allegri, Tuscan like us, who is one of the greatest reference points in Italian football.
